The Best Ballet Shoes for Beginners in the UK
Starting ballet? Skip the fancy split-sole shoes and start with a well-fitted canvas flat. Here's why.
Start with canvas, not leather
For a first shoe, canvas is easier — cheaper, breathable, and machine-washable. Most UK dance schools recommend canvas full-soles for anyone new to ballet.
Buy full-sole first
A full-sole shoe helps a beginner build foot strength. Split-sole shoes flatter a working arch, which most beginners don't have yet.
Size 2–3 UK sizes smaller
Ballet shoes run small. If you wear a UK 6 street shoe, try a 3.5–4 in ballet size. There should be no bunching at the toe and no gap at the heel.
Skip these first-time mistakes
Don't buy satin flats for class — they mark instantly. Don't buy oversized shoes for children to grow into. And don't buy pointe shoes online without a fitting.
