Caring for Pointe Shoes: Make Them Last
A pair of pointe shoes is expensive — here's how to squeeze another week of class out of every pair.
Air-dry after every class
Never store damp pointe shoes in a bag. Pull them open, stuff them lightly with paper, and let them dry on a windowsill overnight. Damp paste weakens fast.
Darn or glue the platform
A hand-darned platform lasts twice as long as a raw one. Shellac or floor-sealer on the platform also stops the pleats fraying — a common professional trick.
Rotate two pairs
Alternate pairs day-to-day so each has 48 hours to dry between classes. Two pairs rotated will outlast three pairs used consecutively.
Know when to retire them
When the shank goes soft under the arch or the box collapses on demi-pointe, the shoe is done. Keep dead shoes as broken-in rehearsal pairs, not for pointe work.
