Ribbons vs Elastics on Ballet Shoes
Every young dancer will one day ask their parent to sew ribbons on. Here's when they actually need them.
Elastics on soft shoes
For soft ballet flats and split-soles, a single arch elastic or two crossed elastics is all you need. Ribbons on soft shoes are for photos only — most teachers ask you to remove them for class.
Ribbons on pointe shoes
Pointe shoes need ribbons and elastics. Ribbons cross the ankle and tie behind the inner ankle bone; elastics run across the front of the ankle.
How to sew ribbons on pointe shoes
Fold the heel of the shoe forward. Sew each ribbon on the inside of the shoe where the fold sits — this is the natural pivot point. Never sew through the drawstring casing.
