How to Fit Ballet Shoes

What size ballet shoe should I buy?
Ballet shoes run 2–3 UK sizes smaller than street shoes. If you wear a UK 6 street shoe, start by trying a UK 3.5–4 in a canvas or leather ballet flat.
How should a ballet shoe fit when I stand in first position?
The longest toe should just touch the end of the shoe with a light finger's pressure. There should be no bunching at the toes and no gap at the heel when you rise to demi-pointe.
Do I need to sew my own elastic?
Most modern shoes come pre-sewn, but if not, sew a single elastic across the arch or two crossed elastics for a more secure fit. Position the elastic so it sits behind the ankle bone.
Should children's ballet shoes have room to grow?
